It’s Devil’s Night

October 30th, 2008 — 8:19pm

If you live in the Detroit area, tonight would be a good night to stock up on some fire extinguishers. It is tradition in the Detroit are to set the city ablaze the night before Halloween nicknamed “Devil’s Night.”

Don’t believe me? Check the Wiki baby. Or watch that 90′s classic The Crow.

Inside my head right now? I’m a little on fire myself. The wife just turned off my single night Center Ice free preview night Islanders-Flyers game for Grey’s Anatomy. Even though the Isles are pretty bad, they are young and without some key players due to injury, it was in HD. This might not be too bad if stupid Grey’s would play some of that cool music they’re known for on the show.

Tomorrow my kids, by their own choice I SWEAR, will be Obama and Mrs. Obama for Halloween. Seriously, all on their own accord and choice. I’m sure there will e pics somewhere so look out for them.

Again, good luck not being set on fire to those in Detroit!

Hmmmm

October 28th, 2008 — 8:57pm

Yesterday Tara R. was the first to guess the song correctly but admitted to cheating? Should she get a prize? If so, should it be a good prize or a cheating type prize…. I say yes, a real prize.

As a fellow blogger, what would constitute a good prize? I have no money to buy and ship something, so what would be a good prize?

By the way, the song was Come Downstairs and Say Hello by Guster. A classic in my opinion. But I love Guster and most everything they do.

So, yesterday was just a bad day. Today, was definately better. It was also colder here. Winter has settled in here for a couple weeks. Our winter, or fall, no difference means highs will be in the mid-60′s for a week before returning to 70′s and 80′s. Do your own conversions metric-ites.

Yesterday I saw an Alaska license plate. Pretty rare in these parts. I can safely say I have seen license plates, with my own eyes in person, from all 50 states. Not just at the theme parks either. I mean in regular every day grocery store shopping life. Is it bad that I know the clerks at my grocery store on an almost first person basis? So well, they never ask to see my credit card anymore. They know me. I’m there almost every day picking up this or that. I kind of like my store though. Always smells good from the bakery, great beer selections and sales, and a fantastic wine section I often just walk through and make mental notes of what to get next time a wine drinker is in town. I love wine, but it’s not a whole lot of fun to experience a new bottle of awesomeness by yourself. French Syrah is my favorite. Most any red from France is a safe bet.I like good Italian reds too. European reds just don’t have that biting aftertaste.

It’s almost time for Beaujolais Nouveau too. For all you Americans, this is the best wine for our turkey dinner. Just goes perfect and is only out for a few weeks a year. It’s also really cheap!

Today is new music tuesday here in the states. You can tell cause my little itunes linky thing has changed. Some decent stuff, check out the new Snow Patrol and Ryan Adams. The new Pink is ok too, that chick can sing.

Also, if any of you will be in the Orlando area Sunday night, I have some extra tickets for the UCF football game. You get to sit next to me live and in person if so. I’ll even invite you to the tailgate which involves games, grilling, and alcohol. Let me know. If not, look for me on ESPN’s coverage of the game. Hopefully Erin Andrews will be there. rawr. Although she’s too tall for a little guy like me! ;)

Last night, my littleist little girl cuddled with me in bed. It was so cute, just some alone time. She sang Fa Fa most of the time, also by Guster, but laid her head on my chest. Then at one point, she just decided to sit up, turned around and gave her daddy a kiss. Again and again. Unprovoked little kisses are the best. It got even better though when she gave me a butterfly kiss! I usually do that, but she gave me one. Awww…..so sweet. I’m such a sucker for that stuff from my little ones.

Blibbity blah, blabbity blib.

Rainy Day

October 27th, 2008 — 7:12pm

“Woke up today, to everything gray.”

No, today wasn’t rainy or gray at all. Matter of fact, I heard it was quite nice outside here. Mid-70′s, bright and sunny, etc… It was still purple in my cubicle world with no windows in the whole office. Anyway, today was just a rainy day in most every other sense.

Just one of those days. Found out I have 3 weeks of PTO(Paid Time Off) from work to use by December 31. Not gonna happen, too much time off with too little time left in the year. No carry over from year to year either. Crap. Too much to do. Being a manager comes with those requirements though. Maybe next year I’ll be better about taking time off for me. I took like 4 days this year, the other days were bereavement leave for my grandmother so those don’t count against you, nor should they.

Aside from that it was a typical Monday at work. Tired from the weekend, shit doesn’t work or breaks for no reason, and yadda yadda yadda. The middle of my day wasn’t half bad, but it ended awful. One of my best employees, my big project go to guy is leaving. Notice served, moving to California. It’s good for him and sparked by his wife’s own transfer request so it just works out well for them. I am truly happy for him and his wife. They are young and ready to start a family and will do well.

This just means I now have to hire someone to replace him. This process is long and tedious and hard. Not only do you need to find someone with the highest technical skills out there and be a good culture fit into our environment. I haven’t needed to hire anyone in almost a year. I like to have a tight group if possible with very little turn over.

Oh yeah, we also have a massive project on the final days and a bigger one in the queue so there is no rest for the weary around my team.

Am I just being whiny? It’s ok, you can tell me. Wah! Poor me…blah blah. I’m just in a mood.

“Someone, someone could tell me
Where I belong
Be calm, be brave, it’ll be okay”

This is what song is stuck in my head right now. Guess the song and maybe you’ll get a neat-o prize. For a hint, see the post title.
