My poor little one has inherited something from me I’d hoped they’d miss out on. She has gotten my genetic code that manifests stress and other things into canker sores. These little bastards are very painful and can make for some very painful days. In case you don’t know what they are, they are little sores that develop in the mouth. Here’s the fancy schmancy Mayo clinic info. They’re not contagious or anything, but they are quite painful.
I’ve been getting them for most of my life. Small small and some larger than others. Sometimes on the inside of my cheek or the base and sides of my tongue. They aren’t really gross or anything but they sure make it difficult to eat, drink and sometimes talk. They seem to suck all the moisture out of your mouth and they tiniest little drip of salt will feel like a hot poker in your mouth. It’s only been in the last recent couple years I haven’t gotten them myself anymore. Perhaps its my new daily vitamin intake or perhaps my mouth just ran out of places to put a new one. Regardless, for me, they have mostly seemed to stop coming.
For my 5 year old though, she has already had several in the past couple years. Over the counter stuff usually only provides temporary relief and it stings like a mother putting it on. My tolerance for pain is far greater than my 5 year old. So tonight as I watched her struggle to eat and then suffer through a topical application, I felt guilty. Not that I could really control the hand me down, I certainly felt torn up inside knowing the tendency came from me. Once they show up there really isn’t much you can do but wait it out.I think that’s the hardest part.

On another note, today I joined in on a newly created blog called http://blogclubformen.com which you should go check out. I’ll put a badge here for the site once it’s invented. Some of the best male writers on the web are here and if you are a male and have a blog, you can join in too. Check it out and sign up if you meet the criteria.
So the week without children has or will come to an end. Maybe. Tropical Storm Claudette may extend our little setup by a day. We’ll see I guess. I hope not as I miss my girls. I won’t get to see them too much tomorrow since I play soccer but I plan on leaving work a little early to greet them at home assuming the plan holds up.
We had a fantastic week. The house stayed neat and tidy more than it has in 5 years. It was quiet and peaceful and nice but lonely. Not that the wife and I don’t make good company for each other, we just missed our little girls. Still though we made the most of it. We caught up n some movies, enjoyed a couple evenings out without worrying about what time we got home and we even got to sleep in. I can;t remember the last time we got to lay in bed on a Sunday morning watching our news show in it’s entirety. At least 5 years I guess. We used to do that on a weekly basis and it was really nice to do that again.
Here is my little review of all the movies we did get to see.
The Hangover – Holy crap was this a damn funny movie. It was just craziness all over the place and funny at every turn and step of the way. There was so much hype from friends and critics and web friends that I was nervous going in, but it did not disappoint. We laughed very hard at the whole thing and will own it when it comes out.
Watchmen – Director’s Cut. This was WAY better than we expected. I talked about this in a previous post so I won’t dwell again, but if you can tolerate a little comic book-ish gore, you should watch it. It follows a different style narrative but it’s different. It’s a good movie and I enjoyed it very much. The wife poo pooed it when I rented it but ended up really liking it as well.
Sicko – I missed the first 20 minutes but will catch them on cable. Ugh, this just makes me so mad that people in our country can be so narrow minded and ignorant about our health care system. It sucks people. It’s broken. People need help and we need to look at France, Britain, Netherlands, Canada, Germany, and even Cuba for the example of direction. Naysayers will poo poo anything Michael Moore does by saying he’s slanting it to his perspective. Whatever, there are some despicable things in here that should not happen on the left or the right side of America. Just watch it start to finish, he picks on both sides.
The Goods – The previews made this look like a laugh fest. It wasn’t much of one but it was enjoyable. I laughed often and it had some really good moments. It’s a dumb 80′s style comedy with shoddy editing and easy lines, but still it was pretty funny. Don’t rush out and see it, but it’s eventually worth a look.
District 9 – Holy crap. I never heard of this flick until a few weeks ago. Even the first trailer I saw had me wondering what it was about. But I was pretty excited to see it come this opening weekend and I was not disappointed. People, this is a good fucking movie. There’s no bullshit with the characters and the story is pretty plausible, all things considered. There is no mystery about the aliens, why they’re there, and what we do with them. The action is intense, the visuals are stunning, and the story flows from start to finish. I got so lost in the story and movie I forgot how long it was, and I also forgot about the asshole who brought his 2 teenage sons and his 5 or 6 year old son. Yep, to an R-rated movie with cursing, violence, and very inappropriate themes and trailers for a 6 year old child. Go see this flick on the big screen. Make the efforts to do so if you have kids, it’s worth it.
Aside from the movies and quiet dinners with my wife, on Saturday night I got to participate in something special. While my wife and her sister were out for a concert, my brother in law and I decided to take his baby boy to his first major league baseball game. He’s all of 10 months old so he will have no recollection of the event but he sure did enjoy himself. He clapped with the crowd, took in everything he possibly could and napped during the middle innings. The crowd noise didn’t bother him for a second and he fussed less than some old guy sitting near us. Lucky for us there were some handicap seats in our section that had some no shows so we sat there and used his stroller and it was perfect. Being the awesome uncle I am, I ate the Carvel ice cream and washed the little hat that he will someday ask where it came from. The B-52′s were doing a free concert after the game but we skipped that. Also it was sci-fi night at the ballpark. I had no idea what that was going to mean until I got there. They should have called it Star Wars night. There were Star Wars characters all over the place for pictures and other little games and stuff. As a big fan of the saga, I found it way cool.
Here are my baseball photos all shot with my iPhone.

This is a baseball game...with snacks
Focused on the action, but feeling drowsy

Lounging and napping, what a good boy!
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock, and the 15th anniversary of the one I went to, here’s some tunes I love. Look, there I am out there in the second video!
A couple months ago I had to read a book for work. Yep, you read that right, a reading assignment as an adult in the workplace. It was ok, kind of hokey, but not terrible. I somewhat enjoyed it although I despise all the mandatory conversation afterward about it. I did take one thing from it though and it’s been a common question asked in the billions of meetings I sit in all week. I will pose that same question from the book to you. If there’s enough response here or through your own blog, perhaps I’ll give you my answers.
