Father’s Day

6 years exactly today since I found out I’d be a dad. I wrote about it last year, so I won’t go into the story again. Just that it was 6 years ago my life changed forever. Since the, every year gets better than the last.

I am her best friend. I fear the power of the influence I have on her. I really don’t try to have such influence, but I just do. If I like it she loves it and we share great moments enjoying whatever it might be. It’s pure bliss and I am savoring every minute of it. I hope it’s still just like this even when the questions get harder. I hope I will lead her in the right direction.

My other beauty will be 4 in 2 months. She is a wonderfully amazing child. So full of spirit and so full of wonder. A smile that charms the world around her and a voice that brings them to their knees. She is tiny for her age, as in 1% of the growth chart for her age. But because she’s still growing there’s no cause for alarm. I was always small and I’m still small. Except for the extra padding around my abs which could have a Budweiser logo since they made it! Anyway, she fascinates me with her memory skills as well her ability to melt my soul with a simple “I love you Daddy.”

So for me, today should be the day celebrated as father’s day because it is on this day, November 1, 2003, I found out I would become one. I don’t need gifts, just another year’s worth of pictures. I don’t need cards for this day because I get pictures made for me all the time only because they want me to smile at them and say thank you. Besides, I don’t wear ties unless someone dies or gets married. I haven’t seen my suit since I don’t know when and I think my suit may be in my sister in laws closet. Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t care. All I care about is keeping my babies safe and happy and so far so good.

So Happy Father’s Day to me. Also to you if you found out on November 1 you’d also become one.

You are an example that should be held up to all young fathers, and fathers-to-be. Your girls are very, very, lucky.

thanks for making me shed a tear on this early monday morning…bah hum bug…but it just made me remember the day i found out that chris and i would be parents for the “first” time (Sep 5, 2001). it was a crazy week (if you remember what else happened that same week) but one day i will never forget. and you’re right, we should celebrate those days.

    Happy Father’s Day!

@ashley, I wish I remembered the exact second day. I remember the moment, just not the day. I guess though you only become a parent once even though you may expand your responsibilities, you’re already a parent. Not that it’s any less important or significant, just not the point of changing direction. I can imagine the week you found out was one of many emotions. At least though you had a few days to yourselves before getting distracted.

It does my heart good to hear a father gush over his children like this, to be unashamedly giddy about being a dad.
